31/7/12- North Greenwich Arena:
The GBR women’s artistic team of Hannah Whlean, Imogen Cairns, Beth Tweddle, Rebecca Tunney and Jennifer Pinches finished 6th in the women’s team final, their best position since the bronze medal of 1928. The team wore beautiful Gymnastics leotards by Stella Mccartney.

The GBR girls started off with a shaky beam after a fall from Pinches and a few uncharacteristic errors from Whelan but as they moved on to their next piece of apparatus it was clear they were determined to put this behind them. On the floor Pinches, Whelan and Tweddle produced solid routines to push the team from eighth up to seventh, which helped regain their confidence. This form continued on vault and bars, where we saw a strongly executed routine from Tweddle to finish off GBRs campaign with a huge 15.833 to take the team up into 6th place for the finish.

The Olympic Champions in the end were the USA who gave a faultless performance to deservedly take the gold. They had been in close contention with Russia but as both teams entered their final piece, the floor, Russia could not hold themselves together and had to count several major errors. Nonetheless the Russian team ended up with silver, with a strong Romanian team finishing in bronze.

Beth Tweddle MBE: “You can’t be disappointed, obviously we’ve dropped from qualifying but it’s not a major disappointment. Four years ago we didn’t make the final, at least we’ve made strides in the past four years. We came in knowing the four powerhouses were fighting for the medals and we were fighting with the other countries.”

Rebecca Tunney: “First Olympic Games and we’re getting into the team final and finishing sixth, you can’t ask for anything bigger. It was inspiring to see the men get a medal. They did their best yesterday and so did we, even though we didn’t medal.”

30/07/2012 North Greenwich Arena:
The GBR men’s artistic team of Max Whitlock, Sam Oldham, Louis Smith, Kristian Thomas and Daniel Purvis have won BRONZE in the men’s artistic team final; the first medal for GBR in 100 years.

The team edged out close rivals the Ukraine and Russia on their last piece, the floor, where Purvis, Thomas and Whitlock showed no sign of nerves nailing their routines. The team initially looked to have taken the silver behind China but a last minute score inquiry from Japan bumped them up from fourth to second ahead of GBR in third. Regardless, it was a historic victory and the packed crowd in the North Greenwich Arena could not contain their excitement.

The team began on pommel, where they went clean helped by an almost flawless performance from Louis Smith who scored an outstanding 15.966 to start them off on a good foot. The boys dipped below after one of their weaker pieces, the rings but they still continued with no major errors, where countries such as USA and Germany began to crumble. Kristian Thomas then performed the vault of his life to really put GBR into the mix with parallel bars straight after, also a clean piece. Then over on the high bar the teams medal hopes looked to be in doubt, Sam Oldham slipped and fell and the boys knew they had to produce something special on floor to edge ahead. That they certainly did, hardly putting a foot wrong and when the crowd realised they had earned a place on the podium, the North Greenwich arena erupted.

Kristian Thomas: “I tried not to look at the scores all the way round as it was so close but couldn’t resist after high bar and then I wish I hadn’t! It didn’t matter though; the crowd were incredible and really helped us through especially as I ended up last on floor so there was a lot of pressure. We initially thought we had the silver but it doesn’t matter to me what colour, I’m standing here with an Olympic medal and I can’t stop looking at it.”

Louis Smith: “That was just unbelievable; I mean when Kristian smashed his vault it was amazing. The support we have had is remarkable and I think that’s the Olympic fever, it adds extra pressure and expectation but you can use that to your advantage. The crowd really get behind you and you can feel it, we were buzzing all the way round.”

The men will next be in action when Kristian Thomas and Daniel Purvis compete in the men’s all-around final on Wednesday (1st August). Tomorrow (31st July), will see the GB women’s team compete in their team final after they qualified in 5th place.

29/7/12- North Greenwich Arena:
The GBR women’s artistic gymnastics team of Beth Tweddle MBE, Jennifer Pinches, Hannah Whelan, Rebecca Tunney and Imogen Cairns have qualified to the women’s artistic Olympic team final for the first time since 1984 in 5th place.
As well as team qualification at stake, Beth Tweddle was under a lot of pressure to complete her difficult bar set to ensure she finished in the top 8 in order to advance to the apparatus finals. However, she performed her routine with complete ease, finishing with a flawless dismount, posting a huge score of 16.133, which qualifies her in first for the final on Monday 6th August.

Reigning British Champion, fifteen year old Rebecca Tunney and 2011 British Champion Hannah Whelan put in solid performances to advance to the all-around finals on Thursday the 2nd August in 13th and 15th place respectively with teammates Jennifer Pinches and Imogen Cairns playing vital parts in the teams qualification.

Beth Tweddle MBE: “I’ve thought about this competition and this bar routine for so long and to produce my best score this Olympic quad in qualifying – it couldn’t be any better. I spoke to Louis Smith about the crowd and pressure and what to expect and he said they lifted him and it was definitely the same for me today, the atmosphere was incredible. The team are like sisters and we all pulled together today and relished the pressure. The balance of the team with the experience of Imogen Cairns, Rebecca Tunney only fifteen years old and performing brilliantly and Hannah and Jenni with great all-around displays- it worked perfectly. For me today was the big pressure day, people tried to calm me but deep down you know you have to perform, so to go out and do it is brilliant. The gymnasts have done a great job both days for GBR.”

The GBR women will next be in action on Tuesday the 31st July in the team final. Tomorrow (Monday 30th July), the GBR men’s team will compete in their team final at 4.30pm after qualifying in third place.

For the full results from today’s qualifications, please click here.

GB apparatus reports

Beam- Team total 39.632

Team captain Imogen Cairns led the way on the beam; known for her consistency she produced a solid routine to start the women off scoring 13.366. Jennifer Pinches followed her up with another clean routine for 13.100. European bronze medallist on this piece of apparatus, Hannah Whelan unfortunately had to count a fall which left her out of event final contention with 13.066. Young Rebecca Tunney was last up and although the youngest and most inexperienced she let nothing faze her and she put in a fantastic performance to score 13.166.

Floor- Team total 42.533

Over on floor Pinches looked more relaxed and produced one of her best routines to score 14.100 with Tunney following up with the same excellent standard for 14.00. Whelan pleased the crowd with her quirky choreography and posted another sound score for GBR (13.933). Tweddle anchored the team on this piece, where she is a former world champion, posting a brilliant14.433.

Vault- Team total 43.333

On the vault, Pinches (14.366), Whelan (14.500) and Tunney (14.400) all performed solid double twisting Yurchenkos to continue GBR’s good form. Cairns (14.433) only went for the one and a half Yurchekno vault but with such great execution scored just as highly as her teammates.

Bars- Team total 45.158

Pinches continued well on bars in what was one of her best competitions of late (13.700). Whelan followed up with a strong routine looking to correct her earlier error on beam (14.200) and youngster Tunney did not put a foot wrong in her complex routine scoring a huge 14.825. Tweddle looked calm and collected as she stepped up onto the podium in front of a packed home crowd. She completed her highest scoring routine within this Olympic cycle, completing all her difficult connections and posting the highest score of the day (16.133) to progress into the apparatus final in first and finish off a fantastic team performance for GBR.

Quatro Gymnatics leotards would like to exptend its congratulations to Team GB for their fantastics performaces

28/07/2012
North Greenwich Arena: The GB men’s artistic team of Max Whitlock, Sam Oldham, Louis Smith, Kristian Thomas and Daniel Purvis have qualified for the first time ever into the Olympic team final.

The team qualified in a historic third place behind powerhouses America and Russia but ahead of reigning Olympic Champions, China by over two and a half marks.

Kristian Thomas qualified in fifth for the all-around with teammate Dan Purvis finishing strongly in tenth, also making the all-around final.

On the pommel, expectation was high for Louis Smith’s routine and he did not disappoint. He was extremely focused and produced a flawless performance to score 15.800. With a standing ovation from the crowd, he could not hold back the tears of joy after getting through clean. Smith goes into the final qualifying in first place and teammate Max Whitlock making his Olympic debut also made the pommel final in eighth.

After an outstanding competition for Kristian Thomas he successfully made the vault final in fifth place.

Krsitian Thomas- “We’ve put in so much hard work for this and to see it pay off like it has today is just so unbelievable. I don’t think I will ever be able to describe the feeling of walking into this arena today and being greeted by that crowd. Personally I’m delighted with my performance but it’s mainly about the team and as a group we are very happy”

Louis Smith- “Today was all about the team, we are a very tight group and we have been through a lot of ups and downs together so to produce a performance like we have done today is one of the proudest moments of my life. We are all a bit overwhelmed by the support and we are so happy to have gone out and put in such a great performance for everybody here and back home. I was so happy to complete my routine as there was a lot riding on it. I couldn’t help thinking about the future, providing for my family, the expectation.”

Next up the GB men will compete in the team final on Monday 30th July at 4.30pm. Tomorrow will see the women qualify, with the GB girls competing in subdivision three at 2.45pm.

For the full results, please click here.

GB apparatus reports

RINGS- Team total 44.199

With huge support from the home crowd the boys showed no signs of nerves on their first piece getting off to a fantastic start. Young Sam Oldham was first up, producing a solid routine, keeping his composure to score 14.6. Kristian Thomas had a few struggles at the beginning but continued well and finished with a stuck dismount to score 14.566. Current British Champion Purvis was calm and collected and produced a fantastic routine to score 15.033 with Max Whitlock rounding off a great start for the boys with 14.133.

VAULT- Team total 48.333

Oldham started off with a strong vault for 15.533 and Whitlock went even better with 16.033, both with little deduction on their landings. Purvis continued the Brits solid vaults with again only a small adjustment on landing earning him a 16.1. Thomas was last up and the only Brit to perform two vaults. He scored 16.2 for his double piked yurchekno and followed this with a handspring double front for 15.766 for a total 15.983, earning him a spot in the vault final.

P-BARS Team total 44.024

P-bars proved to be a shaky piece for GB, however there were no major errors and all of the boys fought through to the end of their routines. Whitlock (13.900), Oldham (14.666), Purvis (14.733), Thomas (14.625).

HIGH BAR Team total 45.199

After a shaky performance at the 2011 World Championships on high bar, the GB team looked to prove they could still produce good performances on this piece of apparatus. Purvis had a strong routine with only few form errors throughout to score 14.733. Oldham continued the steady work scoring 15.100 and Kristian Thomas proved just why he was the 2012 London test event winner on this piece of apparatus with a difficult yet confident performance to score 15.366. Smith also competed on the high bar and although not his strongest event he produced a clean routine to prove he’s not just a one trick pony.

FLOOR Team total 45.832

Whitlock continued to impress with 15.266 and Oldham steadily went through for 14.700. A few deep landings gave Purvis a score of 15.200. Thomas continued his excellent form on floor nailing his landings with great lines for 15.366.

POMMEL Team total 44.833

GB began with an unfortunate fall from Purvis however he recovered and finished well to score 13.400. This error did not faze young Whitlock who is strong on this piece of apparatus, he oozed confidence and didn’t allow the pressure to discourage him scoring a sound 14.900. When Smith stepped up for his routine, the crowd were the loudest we had heard them so far. He looked completely focused and performed almost a flawless routine to score 15.800 earning him a place in the event final in the top spot. Thomas finished off his fantastic all-around campaign scoring 14.133.

The Sainsbury’s 2012 School Games took place on the 6-9th of May. The second day of competition saw the artistic gymnastics programme in full swing, at the ExCel Centre in London.

The Men’s Artistic competition started promptly at 11.15am. The Welsh men fought hard over their six pieces of apparatus to take a well-earned team bronze. Finishing 3rd with 288.500 they were literally breathing down the necks of their closest rivals Scotland who took 2nd with 289.450.

Over eight rotations the boys made large headways into the all-around finishing places with Iwan Mepham of Barry YMCA securing the highest Welsh placing in 8th, Ben Eyre in 12th, Joseph Rowland in 13th, Saull Thomas in 14th, Cilan Thomas in 19th and Ben Dennis 22nd.

The artistic competition re-started with the Women’s event at 4.30pm. The Welsh girls pushed themselves in each of the four pieces of apparatus to challenge team England for the gold spot. In the end England finished 1st with 204.250 and Wales in 2nd with 188.900.

In the all-around results Elizabeth Dare of Phoenix Gymnastic Club was short of the medals in 5th place with 48.500, Sasha Winton scored 46.550 to take 8th, Eloise Aitken placed 9th, while Rhyannon Jones took 10th, Rebecca Moore was in 12th, Harriet Moore in 13th and Annaliese Evans, who contributed to the team score with 10.700 on the floor finished 18th.

In the individual Elizabeth Dare placed 5th twice in the Vault and the Beam. Team mate Rhyannon Jones went one better to agonisingly miss out on the medals with two 4th place finishes on the Floor and Vault.

Jac Davies of Swansea GC was also a reserve for the Welsh men’s team and scored a respectable 23.150 on Pommel Horse and Floor.

The multi-sport event was being held in London at four Olympic venues, hoping to build on the excitement and inspirations for the 2012 Games.

The competition presents the UK’s elite young athletes with the opportunity to thrive and perform at the highest level. Around 1,600 athletes are expected to compete in front of 35,000 spectators.

The competition features twelve current and future Olympic and Paralympic sports: Fencing, Rugby Sevens, Gymnastics, Hockey, Badminton, Athletics, Cycling, Judo, Swimming, Table Tennis, Volleyball and Wheelchair Basketball.

May saw Europe’s best junior gymnasts take to the floor at the Expo Arena, in Brussels, to get the 2012 Women’s Artistic Gymnastics European Championships underway.

The junior qualifications were spread over the day, with countries split into three subdivisions. Competing at 12pm in subdivision 1 was the junior GBR team, made up of three Welsh gymnasts Angel Romaeo, Raer Theaker, Georgina Hockenhull and two English gymnasts, Gabrielle Jupp and Charlie Fellows.

The girls all performed exceptionally to score 160.121 to put Team GBR in a brilliant 4th place in the team standings behind Russia, Italy and Romania.

Confidence and Style

In the individual standings Gabrielle Jupp finished 7th with 54.082 and Angel Romaeo 11th with a score of 52.932. Their results qualify them for the all-around finals on Friday, as only the two top gymnasts per country can qualify. Charlie Fellows was just edged out of qualification with a 13th place and score of 52.299.

Angel showed her confidence and style on the Beam and Bars scoring 13.333 in both, which moved her significantly up the Beam and Bar rankings at the time of the first subdivision competition.

Georgina Hockenhull and Raer Theaker each made significant contributions to the overall team score, competing in two pieces of apparatus each.

Raer performed in the Vault and Bars, having sat out on the first piece of apparatus, floor, in the 1st Rotation. Raer got Team GBR off to a great start with a Vault average of 13.216 and 13th place in the individual Vault standings.

Georgina Hockenhull, who was making her début in a GBR team, was the first British junior gymnast performing today and took a respectable 11.500 on the floor in the 1st Rotation. Georgina also competed on the Beam scoring 12.408.

The all-around final for the juniors is on Friday 11th May and starts at 6.00pm.

This is the first time that gymnasts from Wales have dominated a British Gymnastics Team.

The Welsh Women’s Artistic Gymnasts swept the boards at the Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastic Celtic Cup in Dublin over the weekend, securing the Celtic Cup not once but twice.

Split into two categories, minor and junior, the competition saw the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland and Wales compete against each other to be crowned Celtic Cup champions.

The Welsh women’s minor squad were first to compete on the Saturday. Individually Rhyannon Jones took 3rd place and Eloise Aitken’s score of 47.5 was enough to hold off Northern Irelands Casey Bell for 1st place. Coupled with the 4th place performance from Harriet Moore and high scores from Millie Jones, Maisie Methuen and Annalise Evans meant that the Celtic Cup in the minor category was theirs.

Second in the running was the Welsh women’s junior team who were beyond exceptional. They secured the junior Celtic Cup with a score of 193.25, 21 clear marks over 2nd placed rivals Northern Ireland.

Quite remarkably the team individually took the first 5 placing’s in the competition; Kiera Brennan in 1st, Georgina Hockenhull in 2nd, Rebecca Moore in 3rd, Hollie Moore and Latalia Bevan taking 4th and 5th respectively. Sasha Winton also competed for the Welsh Junior team but only on the A-Bars and Beam.

Carly Hawke the Competition and Programme Support Officer at Welsh Gymnastics was supporting the Welsh teams in Dublin and said,

“All the girls competed exceptionally well, with some outstanding performances over all 4 pieces of apparatus. The Minors were a young team but they really kept their composure throughout the event and worked well together as a team. The Juniors were outstanding and to place top 5 individually is a fantastic result.”
